My students need a listening center! More than half of my students come from low-income households that do not allow them early access to the technology needed to advance them at this level. Helping our classroom with the funds for this technology would allow groups of students to listen to stories being read to them during literacy centers while they closely follow along with the words on the pages. Research-based suggest that following along to stories read-aloud greatly improves students' reading as it models fluency, accuracy, and expression at a steady rate. These components are vital to engaging students in the adventures of texts. I love reading to my students and allowing them to read to the class, but the experience of reading independently and getting lost in a great book is truly priceless! This listening center will develop their reading level, drive them to grade level texts, and set them on a pathway for future success as their love for reading is improved.
