Our school is an incredible learning environment that serves three unique student populations in grades K-8. My gifted and talented 5th graders have the great fortune to walk the halls, collaborate with, and learn from students who are profoundly deaf and students with multiple impairments. In addition to their distinct learning needs, our students come from a variety of backgrounds within our city. Needless to say, our learning environment is rich with diversity and experience, and this becomes most evident when we dive into discussions about what we are reading. The one thing my students have in common is a love for reading. You can find several of my kids reading while eating lunch, reading during their recess, and even sneaking a peak at a book during instruction time! My challenge as their teacher is to encourage quality over quantity, help them discover meaning between the lines of text, and encourage a deeper appreciation for literary structure and devices.
