These materials will help us create a comfortable and welcoming classroom home for our second graders. Many students struggled to readjust to school after the pandemic last year, and it is our aim to provide our scholars with an educational and enriching space where they feel seen, heard and valued. We believe that one of the best ways we can do this is to give our students the very best materials we can so that their focus can be on the learning at hand. We also believe they deserve access to enrichment and socioemotional learning materials to help make the day as fun as it is academically challenging. Specifically, we are requesting children's face masks and Lysol disinfectant wipes because they are currently not provided, and we want to keep ourselves and our scholars safe as we continue to navigate these uncertain times. We are also requesting some basic and necessary materials like scissors, erasers and notebooks so that students are able to complete their work with tools they need as well as floor cushions for each student to comfortably do partner work and group instruction conducted on the floor. (We use a rug for small groups.) A class set of skin tone crayons will mean that all students, regardless of background, can portray themselves in self-portrait activities. We have also requested recess equipment as our students currently have none, and it helps us structure safe and inclusive outdoor time, as well as Play-Doh and magnetic tiles to help foster student creativity and collaboration during choice time. Lastly, we are asking for a social-emotion resource book to help us learn new strategies to help our scholars thrive, fidget toys to help students in need of a sensory-based calm down activity, and an SEL poster set to help teach students self-regulation.
