My future Media Movers and Shakers are an amazing group of African-American and Latino 8th graders. Our school, Century Community Charter School, is a project-based school whose mission is to educate the future leaders of America. One of the opportunities available is the Media Studies class where they learn to evaluate and use new media such as blogging and podcasting. As they use the tools, they also critically look at how media influences society and our perception of the world. My Media Studies class is not the only class using new media. I am also using new media in my Language Arts classes to bring literature and writing alive. They complete assignments online and will also create digital stories through the use of HyperStudio. By incorporating the new media in my class,I am also exposing my students to opportunities they may not have and also allowing them to compete with their more fortunate peers.
