I have realized that Direct Instruction only goes so far in math before students start tuning you out. When they work with others on projects and assignments, it helps both the strong student and the weaker student by working together. Classrooms that are student centered are successful. Allowing them to work together in groups at tables instead of stationary at a desk gives them more patience and more attention. Having them teach each other helps them to retain information better. Stand-up white board desks for students to gather around and work at increase willingness to work together and give them more confidence for future endeavors. These tables are also more engaging.
