I will be moving into another classroom next year fixed with tables instead of desks. This gives students the opportunity to work together on projects, do novel studies, and do hands-on science projects with others.
What the room is missing is creative and comfortable seating where students aren't subject to sitting in hard uncomfortable chairs all day.
Think about how kids sit and learn in other environments. They may sit in a banana chair, on the couch with their feet tucked under them, or lay on the floor. Having optional seating allows students to feel comfortable and relaxed in the classroom. This helps to let them know they have choices in projects, seating, and learning.
Why is the most comfortable chair in the room always the teacher's chair? In teaching second grade my students are in their chairs more than I am in a chair. I know when I am in a hard chair in a meeting all day, by the end of the day all I can think about is getting up and moving around.
Please consider funding my seating project. I have started flexible seating with my own money, however, I wish to add more variety to my classroom. A couch would allow my students who can't physically sit up in a chair to sit on the couch with a friend and read or work on projects. It allows them to be part of our class without feeling different or left out.
