I am a special education teacher at a Title I school with approximately 750 students. Our student make-up is just over one third Hispanic, with about one third African American and the other third white. Approximately 70% receive free and reduced lunch, and 19% are identified as exceptional learners (does not include academically gifted). I am entering my fourth year of teaching, with the first three as an inclusion teacher, partnered with a regular education teacher, teaching students with disabilities within the regular education classroom setting. This year I will be teaching reading and math in a resource setting. This means that each block I will teach 12 students with disabilities, including learning disabilities in reading, writing, and/ or math, mild intellectual disabilities, moderate intellectual disabilities, autism, ADHD, serious emotional disturbance, and visual impairment. Several have more than one of these disorders. Am I nervous? A little. Am I excited? Absolutely!
