As a Freedom Writer Teacher (trained by Erin Gruwell in Long Beach, CA), I am requesting a classroom set of The Diary of Anne Frank to give my 9th graders and 12th graders a chance to read and interact with complex texts. This experience would help fulfill our state and national standards in ELA as well as serve as a resource that can be used for many years to come. I want to incorporate this text in a unit about the Holocaust and its effects, and I know it will provide many opportunities for my students to read, react, and respond at a higher level. We need to continue to learn about the Holocaust with this first-hand account from Anne Frank. Please help if you can!
