I teach a tutoring elective and an English class in a multi-ethnic, lower socioeconomic district. My middle school students are referred to me for reading, writing, math, organizational, and behavior support. They are amazingly smart and insightful when they can get their hands on a book that interests them. However, their own experiences of failure and the resulting self-doubt is the biggest impediment to their progress. Having access to graphic novels would allow students to spend more time honing their reading skills in a motivating context.
