Recently, I had my students look through a book that we would be reading, and write down words that they were unsure of the meaning of. In total, the students came up with over 30 words! I glanced at my 5 preselected words that I had pictures for and realized the lesson would have to wait until the following day. I wanted to find pictures of the other unknown words and print them out and also build in more class discussion time to go over the vocabulary words. If I had just read the story, the students may (or may not have) picked up some of the meanings of the unknown words as the story was read and discussed. I would have discussed the words with my students but again with no visuals, they may not have been fully comprehending the class discussion. This is not a risk I wanted to take or time that I had to waste. My school is in an urban neighborhood of MA and is comprised of households of low socioeconomic status. 66% of the students have a first language that is not English.
