The School Counseling profession has changed since the pandemic in 2020. The focus on social and emotional needs have increased along with anxieties in our youth. Along with the direct and indirect services, counselors are often called upon for our “Safe Space” classroom and stress relief activities. Anxieties have increased due to our students fluctuating from virtual to in person learning with the open options of either choices due to the ongoing Covid variants. This impact has especially been intrusive and detrimental to those of lower socioeconomic backgrounds as well as traditionally under-served populations. As a school counselor of a Pre-K through 3rd grade school, my goal is to provide a safe environment where our students have the ability to have access to the fundamental resources that will help them establish a quality of life while dealing with everyday stressors inside and outside the classroom. This will help guide them into a “new normal” way of life and still deal with underlying issues. These items that I have wished for, will have the greatest impact on student success and help with social emotional needs that have increased since the pandemic.
