Students view the library as a home away from home, because of the inviting atmosphere. Many of my students do not have any books at home, except the books given by me and the school. They view the library as a special place and are avid readers. I give each class of students free time to read on the story rug at the end of the library instruction sessions. It is cute to watch the preschoolers sitting on the rug and developing their emergent reading skills. They turn the pages left to right, examine the pictures closely, and love to share their discoveries with their reading buddies. Teens also are attracted to the story rug, because they can sprawl out.
