My kids are some of the hardest working kids I have ever come across. At the same time they are surrounded by hopeless situations and I often have to push the possibilities of success in their faces to get them to see that they are capable of the same or better than those in better funded schools and more affluent neighborhoods. Mine are the kids that come to class and say they could not do their homework because their house was robbed or their uncle was shot and they spent the night at the hospital, and they are telling the truth. I will give everything I am to them but even I cannot do everything without some help.
