These materials will allow students to participate in the Terrapins in the Classroom program, which gives students the opportunity to raise a Maryland Diamondback Terrapin in our classroom. Some of materials listed, such as the whisper filter, submersible heater, and heat emitter, are used to create the terrapin's environment. Consumables, such as the terrapin food and bio-bag filter cartridges, will be used up over the course of the year. The calipers and nitrile gloves are used for data collection and measuring of the turtle. The Terrapins in the Classroom program is facilitated by the National Aquarium and supports Chesapeake Bay based ecological research. After raising the turtle over the course of the school year, the turtle will be released back into the bay, the terrapin's native habitat. Students will not only be able to observe the development of the terrapin over the course of the year, they'll be playing an active role in the care of the terrapin, maintenance of the tank, and tracking of turtle data -- such as weight and size.
