Because my students all have some form of speech or language disability, reading comprehension can sometimes be a challenge for them. Literacy skills are so essential to classroom success, however, and I want each of them to experience the joy of reading. In order for this to happen, my students need repeated exposure to literacy materials. Using the same books in speech sessions that they are reading in class will give my language impaired students multiple exposures to the same materials and give them a better chance at developing skills that will aid in reading comprehension. I am hoping to purchase a set of Scholastic books to stock my speech room library. With these materials, my students will have the opportunity to engage in story-telling and build narrative skills, as well as inferencing skills. These books will be used with such a wide variety of ages and ability levels and would be so impactful for my speech students.
