I teach Career and Academic Planning for Seniors. It is a new required class our high school added this year due to teacher and community demand. Students are graduating without very basic career and college technology readiness skills. They know the material, but they do not know how to apply it in the real world via technology. In our class, we apply to colleges; apply for grants and scholarships; type college essays; write cover letters and resumes; apply for employment; learn to use Google Meet, Zoom; set up employment and network social media profiles, and discuss basic banking and financial needs. We also discuss workplace etiquette, practice interviews, discuss how to behave with law enforcement, etc. but the technology component is the main skill that needs to be addressed in order to fully meet these students' needs. Our school has 5 total laptop carts of 25 each for a school of 750+ students. I cannot maximize the instruction I need to do with technology because I am always waiting on a cart. When I do get a cart, I need the students to work on items for several days, but I may only have the cart of day, and I have to pause and come back to that topic when I can get a cart again. Also, our school does not offer any sort of keyboarding class. One of the only classes in which I continue to benefit is typing. This would allow me the opportunity to work with students on their typing skills before they leave high school.
