Our 5th graders have participated in versions of the 40 Book Challenge started by Donalyn Miller, starting with a 4 month 20 Book Challenge, and last year completing 40 books over the year. The challenge is about students reading a lot of books, books they WANT to read, not books they have to read. This is where Kwame Alexander comes in. Kids WANT to read his books. Partly because they are in verse, which helps those intimidated by too many words on a page, and mostly because they are well written books that have a lot of heart. Kwame Alexander books have been a favorite for boys and girls, athletes and nonathletes, and students from all backgrounds. Our few classroom copies were in such high demand throughout the year that more copies are needed. Your donation will help provide five hardcover copies of three "in demand" titles for students to read at home and school.
