My project is to create a positive, safe, calming corner in my resource classroom. Every child encounters a time when they experience overwhelming emotions. Without self-regulation or a safe place to escape, these emotions can escalate. One student at a time will be able to use the calming corner. During the time the student spends in the calming corner, the student will be able to pick something from the basket of stress relief and sensory toys. This project will help multiple students and will continue to be used for many school years after. Teaching the students how to keep themselves in control in emotionally charged situations will help them be successful throughout their schooling and lives. When children feel great frustration, anger, sadness or anxiety, they become confused and may be unsure how to control their emotions. This also provides opportunities for diffusing a negative emotion or situation before it escalates.
