Many of the students that I teach are in low income households, and this year the Baton Rouge flooding has resulted in many of my students losing all of their belongings. Students receive raffle tickets in my class for participation, good grades, and good work ethic in general. Every month, I raffle off items that students can win and bring home for them to own and keep in their houses. I did this last year and not only does it motivate the students to participate and work hard in class, but it also rewards the students for going above and beyond their expectations. Last year I paid for all of my prizes with my own money, but this year I am looking to have some prizes paid for by Donors Choose so that I can have even more prizes for my students to win. Some items that the students will be able to win are earbuds that they can use at school on their Chromebooks, musical instruments that they can learn on their own, and footballs and basketballs for them to play with at home. My students have shown a great interest in being active and learning instruments, but many need some extra help to be able to afford these items to have at their homes. Since I am also a coach for volleyball and basketball, I try to encourage the students to go outside and play as often as they can. My students deserve to be rewarded for their extra effort. They have been through a lot this year, and I think that these rewards will help them to appreciate the hard work they put into Math!
