I need help building my existing classroom library! I envision a library filled with books that reflect and celebrate the diversity among my students. "Windows and Mirrors"--"a mirror is a story that reflects your own culture and helps you build your identity. A window is a resource that offers you a view of someone else's experience." I believe in the importance of students seeing themselves and their shared experiences in the books they read. I would love for my students to be exposed to diverse texts that reflect not only their own experiences but also the experiences of others. Finding yourself reflected in a book is powerful. Honestly, many of the books in my classroom library now have white characters or animals and inanimate objects. Based on statistics compiled by the Cooperative Children's Book Center, approximately 75% of children's books in 2015 depicted white characters, and only about 8% depicted African or African Americans and only about 3% Asian Americans. The good news-there has been improvements and more wonderful authors have since written more wonderfully diverse picture books. Children now have more options to look into a "window" as they read but also a "mirror" as they read. Diverse books help promote respect and empathy for all types of people. I have collected quite a few diverse texts in my first 3 years of teaching but I would love to have even more! Please consider helping me purchase these amazing books to provide "mirrors and windows" for my Kindergarteners!
