Movement is such an important component of the learning experience. Studies show movement and the brain helps students retain new or nearly new information more readily. Instead of sitting in traditional desks, my students are moving around the classroom and sitting in alternative seating arrangements, i.e. floor pillows, bench seating and scoop chairs. Along with large motor movement, it is important to provide opportunities for fine motor movement. It would benefit my students to have access to fidget items in order to: help them calm down, retain information and relax while increasing muscle tone in their hands. Although I have some flexible seating options, additional choices will give students more control over their learning environment. The flex-space collaborative floor workspace bundle will allow students to sit comfortably on the floor at the appropriate table height~perfect for working collaboratively on STEM projects! The second part of my project addresses the need for increased hand strength while at the same time decreasing inattention. Theraputty, hand weights and fidgets will help students stay focused while increasing fine motor skills. Thank you for considering helping with my project!
