Did you know that twenty-one percent of adults in the United States (about 43 million) fall into the illiterate/ functionally illiterate category?! Reading is the foundation of all learning. I am a first-year special education teacher, working at a new public charter school in rural Idaho. I teach all grades (K-12) and am starting out with very little. Most of my students are far below their grade level for reading fluency and comprehension. The Touch and Read Blends and CVC word cards will help my younger students learn to decode words, which will improve fluency. The Building Fluency Card Bank will give my students the practice they need to read, analyze, and learn to use inferences and context clues, which builds fluency and comprehension skills. Teachers Pay Teachers is an economical way to find and customize, fluency passages and phonics materials that other teachers have used and had success with. These materials will help my students at every level of their reading development. Reading is the passport to countless adventures. I would love to open this world up to my students. Strong reading skills can improve all areas of learning from math (story problems) to science, social studies, history, and all other subject areas. In addition, research shows that regular reading improves brain connectivity, empowers us to empathize with other people, reduces stress, lowers blood pressure and heart rate, and fights depression symptoms. The benefits of reading are never-ending!
