This project will provide TI-34 scientific calculators for my five classes of math students. At the start of this year I purchased $5 calculators for my classroom set, but they are so cheaply made that they started falling apart by December. Right now I have ten left, so when we need to use calculators, I instruct the students who have phones to use the calculators on their phones. This current solution is obviously problematic because: it highlights who has phones and who doesn't; the phone calculators are not designed for higher-order math; and it invites the misuse of phones in class. Having access to proper, durable Texas Instruments scientific calculators will let all my students use the same excellent tool; those students without phones won't have to use the cheap falling-apart calculators anymore, and those WITH phones can leave their phones put away. The distraction of having broken calculators will not be a distraction any longer; on the contrary, using a "fancy" proper calculator will be a boost to their confidence and their motivation!
