My class and I have just finished the Reconstruction Era of our country and we want to Head West! Instead of following a traditional path, I would like my students to walk in the footsteps of the orphans aboard the Orphan Trains. I would like for each of my students to have their own copy of Orphan Trains: Taking the Rails to a New Life which follows seven different children and brings their journey to life. Through the book, we will adventure with the children aboard the trains and learn how the country grew from the bravery and determination of the pioneers and made their way to a better life while also looking at the lives of children, placed on trains, and sent out. I would like to use this book among others to show an event in history that is not usually talked about in school. I will also use this book to teach Informational Text Features, Language, Craft, and Structure as it is a beautiful example and is easily tied into our Social Studies curriculum about the Westward Expansion of our country.
