My scholars are "the hardest working students in New York," according to the banner that adorns the hallway as you approach the main doors. And banners don't lie. Just this week my class chose to work straight through recess to finish a group discussion evaluating the importance of the rising action events to the central conflict of Frindle. They understand that they must work hard everyday so they meet our Big Goal of passing the New York State ELA exam in the spring, and so they can eventually realize their dreams of going to college. They arrive at 7:15 everyday and are in class until 4:00, many staying even later for after-school groups or coming on Saturdays for extra tutoring. Our school day is demanding, but no more demanding than my scholars are of themselves.
