The students in my classroom will come to me pretty much empty handed. When I take a dry erase marker and write a math problem on top of someone's desk, they freak out! They have usually been told not to write on the desks (and many other things), but when I remind them that the markers are "Dry Erase" and that the marks just erase when I'm done, they think it's magic. Then, when I have markers in the classroom for them to use so they can do the same, they get excited about math. Third grade students love to use markers, so using those with the white boards makes math super fun. When students are having fun, I sneak in the learning. That's when the pencils and pencil sharpener comes in handy. It's amazing how grid paper can make learning math super easy and cool. The basics must be taught and mastered in 3rd grade. It is very important for 3rd graders to have a handle on addition and subtraction so we can move on to multiplication. Using the grid paper helps students keep their numbers in the correct column which usually fixes mistakes at this level. It also helps when learning multiplication as well as symmetry and many other standards. It is also just different. Using something different than they have seen before keeps their attention. Keeping their attention and making them think that math is fun, when using the markers and white boards, is more than half the battle. If the kids are having some fun, using cool new supplies, and being successful on their math problems, then we have all won.
