Our language arts department has been getting our students interested in reading through novels that hold stories they can relate to--stories they can believe in. But as I teach, I find that it's not just interesting books that students need, but interesting books they can understand. Many of my students are behind in their reading level. And those students are sometimes discouraged by thick books and long pages of text. As an educator, I have to find a way to overcome this and still make those books understandable to all of my students. I've been researching graphic novels in the classroom, and I believe that I can pair the book Monster by Walter Dean Myers to its graphic novel equivalent. The students would still read the text novel, but I would use the graphic novel to help students visualize the story and focus on the mood and tone of the authors. I already have the graphic novel I can pull from, however, I need two class sets so my partner and I can teach this novel together! These books would stay in the classroom so they may inspire students for years to come.
