Today's society is spiraling straight into future history books and yet my Title I (low income) students are currently living in a world in which they still see predominant types featured in many aspects of entertainment. Movies, TV shows, and even literature are dominated by characters that they cannot relate to- be it the color of their skin, their gender identity, their family background, or the obstacles they face outside of the classroom. As an English teacher, I have an amazing opportunity to change a student's entire view on reading, as well as make them feel seen, heard, and represented. By expanding my classroom library to include more books with characters of different races, ethnicities, gender identities, and life experiences, I hope to connect each struggling reader to a book that will change their perspective on both reading and the world they live in.
