In my classroom, we utilize a workshop structure for many of our lessons specifically when we are working on reading or writing. In order for the workshop structure to be most effective, we need to be able to gather together in a more informal way away from our desks and tables. Right now we have no way to do this without asking students to sit on a cold, linoleum floor. The use of carpet squares, yoga balls and stools would provide my students with various ways to gather while also maximizing our limited classroom space. This seating would make it easier to work in groups (both large and small) without having to rearrange our entire classroom.
By offering flexible seating options for my students, I would be able to encourage more opportunities for collaboration between one another while also using areas throughout the classroom beyond the desks and tables they are assigned to. I have also carefully selected items that students can quickly and easily grab without my help and can also be simply stored away when they are not in use.
