Many things have changed in education since we were in school such as the curriculum, technology use, and the standards our students should master at the end of the year. However, one thing has stayed the same throughout all these years. That one thing is student seating. Students are always sitting in desks for most of the day. We require these students to sit for long periods of time without getting out of their seats. Sometimes we, as teachers, try to spice things up with new seating arrangements, such as pods, but that doesn't always seem to help. Studies show that too much time sitting in a desk can be bad for a child's health. And that is exactly why I want to incorporate flexible seating in my classroom. I believe students need to be actively engaged in their learning to be the most successful. I'm hoping with the stools, balance balls, pillows, and reclining picnic seats I will be able to give my students the learning environment they need in order to achieve at their highest potential. My students will have a choice on which seat works best for them. It will allow them to be comfortable while learning. Along with these options, my students will be able to use the book bins to store their supplies in instead of using desks. It's a whole new learning atmosphere, but I'm excited to give it a try!
