Providing my students laptops with touch screens will help them to become more independent. Many of my students have fine motor disabilities on top of their cognitive disabilities. They struggle greatly to make the connection of using a mouse. The concept is too abstract for many of them. We are choosing to focus more on their ability to use a computer to access the world and also to strengthen their word processing skills. Students will use the laptops to practice job skills by filling out real applications and finding resources to help advocate for their futures. One of my students is easily frustrated by trying to write her messages by hand. Her handwriting is always illegible no matter how hard she tries. If she is given a laptop she will be able to more effectively communicate with the world. When given the right tools it is exciting to see my students' futures open up, just like any other child!
