My Forensic Science class is comprised of students who are in the 11th and 12th grade. Due to the increased popularity of shows such as CSI, NCIS, and Bones, student interest in Forensic Science is high. Naturally, lots of students want to learn the techniques they see demonstrated on the screen. What they don't always anticipate, though, is how much science they will learn in the process. Through the process of learning to collect and analyze data, students explore the fundamentals of biology, chemistry, physics, and geology in a hands-on, active manner. Many of my students aspire to a career related to this field (crime scene investigator, law enforcement, lab technician, etc.), but even those who don't come away with a greater understanding of the core sciences and how those principles can be applied in a manner that directly impacts our society.
