How are we supposed to care for the environment if we don't even know what is out there? This is the question I asked about 5 years ago when I started the North Carolina Wildlife class at our school. My goal from the beginning was to inspire students to appreciate the environment they are living in by teaching them what they ignore every day. I do this by introducing them to nature from a scientific standpoint. In essence, I teach my students to "tweet". This is so much more than just looking at a bird and knowing the name. Having functional binoculars will give my students an opportunity to engage in the science of Ornithology on a completely different level. "Tweeting" in my class is learning what birds do through observation, descriptive writing, and presentation, tools that are essential to any scientist. With the equipment I currently have in the classroom (4 somewhat functional pairs of binoculars, along with some very cheap pairs that have varying degrees of damage), students are not able to be engaged in as meaningful a way. Having these binoculars would be a game changer.
