I wish you could meet the students in my classroom. Ages 5 to 8, and all with a diagnosis of intellectual disabilities, they bring an energy and inquisitiveness that seems endless! We're in a large school district in an urban area, and each student qualifies for free meals at school. We're also a year-round school. My students' abilities range widely, from highly verbal and social to almost completely non-verbal. All have the ability and desire to learn and connect. Everything we do in our classroom is about developing their maximum level of independence and self-actualization. That means providing them with the most effective ways to communicate their needs and desires; it also means developing their motor skills through therapeutic play and practice.
