My students are wonderful and eager learners. Our students are inundated with technology; this has a negative effect on the attention span of the students. In order to keep these students actively engaged in the curriculum we need to use laboratory activities. Our school is located in a predominately middle class to upper class neighborhood; with 19% of our students on the free and reduced lunch program. Students are deprived of many of the activities and technology that other schools have due to our lack of funding such as Title 1 and QUIA. Chemistry is an elective science course that juniors take. At my school chemistry has become a class that most of the juniors take. Labs are a requirement of the course for the UC and CSU systems. My students learn best through firsthand experiences, giving students these experiences they can retain and relate the information to their lives and in subsequent science courses.
