I'm an intervention teacher in a high-poverty city, one filled with loving and dedicated families, students who want safe places to learn, and peers who believe in creating lasting relationships with their kids. I work with 2nd-5th graders who have, generally, struggled with reading their entire lives. They're still working hard to sound out simple words, make sense of words they don't hear in every day conversations, and use a language--English--that's usually not their first language. My academic background is in English & Creative Writing, and I've taught reading classes to struggling readers, from ages 4 to 90, throughout the country. I've also lead Boys & Girls Clubs, and taught soccer to kids in New Jersey. Giving struggling readers the opportunity to learn repeatable reading skills is a gift for me, not just for my students: seeing them struggle, and persevere, and ultimately succeed, gives me meaning.
