Our district recently shifted from a reading program to a reading model, where it is very important to have the essential reading materials that we use daily during our reading block. Our school is in a low-income area. We are a Title 1 school which means that 70% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. In our classroom we have 23 students that are all diverse learners, where parent involvement is scarce. With budget cuts, our school is unable to fund the reading materials needed for the classrooms, so teachers are expected to purchase these things themselves. With NC teacher salaries being one of the lowest in the country, teachers are unable to provide the supplies they need.
