Some (not all) of our students have games and computers at home, but this [the game room] would be a step above. The attraction is that the game room would be similar to an arcade. Students can use the game room after school if there is supervision -- which is provided by school staff -- but the real treat will be earning time during the school day. Its like a pay day--Students know they have to do things so they can get to the game room. If they read a certain number of books, make the honor roll, or are student of the month, they can earn passes to the game room. Or if the whole school does well on assessment, everyone might get passes. A lot of the games also have an educational focus. Certain games require reading, math, science, and social studies skills. While playing the Wii golf, for example, participants have to learn to adjust their swing and plot their angles for a successful shot. Part of life is making adjustments. This also teaches them to set a goal and reach for it -- if their behavior changes, they are rewarded. Elementary-school students in particular respond to rewards, and we are always trying to devise new enticements. The best way of involving students is simply to ask them what they want, and believe me, they will tell you. Sometimes as simple as a scoop of ice cream will help motivate students. They love to socialize -- parties are always saved for the big reward of doing well in academics and conduct. The game room will just take the enticements to a new level.
