As a therapist traveling between schools in a low income/high poverty district, I hear and see many of the difficulties my students face on a daily basis. Many come from single or split parent families, and some with heart wrenching backgrounds. They attend a district with significant needs; one that provides free food and water, and one that is also very limited in resources. On top of this, my students and their families are stuck in the middle of a water crisis. My 'classroom' is comprised of over 4 buildings and more than 10 classrooms. My students range from preschool through sixth grade and have a wide range of ability and need, with eligibility indicators including but not limited to, ADHD, autism, physical disabilities, emotional regulation difficulties, and/or speech/fine motor delays. My students are FUN, creative, and sometimes challenging, yet they are always determined to beat the odds.
