My school is located in one of the poorest districts in the city. Our students arrive at the school door having braved a myriad of challenges. A few live in neighborhood homeless shelters, some are in foster care, others come from single parent homes, and more than two-thirds of them are the offspring of foreign born parents and speak a language other than English. While they are not rich in terms of material possessions, the gifts they bring to the world (including the joy they bring to my life) cannot be measured in terms of dollars and cents. I am always amazed at how hard they work in spite of their limitations. They are my heroes and I consider serving them a great privilege because I learn just as much from them as they learn from me.
