The Martian by Andy Weir (both book and movie) is so much more than a science fiction adventure. It's a powerful force for making STEAM cool. For bringing the content that we discuss in class to life. It's a lot of things, but at the heart of the story, there's science. And there's someone who survives because of what they know. Science as story is science that sticks. I want to use The Martian in my chemistry classes, both to pull out the examples of chemistry in the book, but also to do more. I want the story to spark their imaginations about their futures with STEAM and STEAM-based careers. We'll read the novel over the course of the semester, pull its examples for labs and exercises, and students will write their own short, science-based stories for a final project in the class. This will truly help science come alive for my students, help instill the joy of reading, and hopefully help them start to see a little more of their possible futures.
