My students are thrilled by every opportunity they've had to use technology creatively, including designing e-books, learning to code, and using adaptive teaching programs. They've also experienced frustration with the limitations of the out-of-date or damaged technology they have access to in our remote area, 100 miles from our district office. With iPads in the classroom, my students will cultivate their curiosity, develop foundational skills, integrate literacy and mathematics, collaborate and communicate with others, think critically, and express themselves creatively. With these tools for learning, they will jump into new learning opportunities, such as: ✩Completing cross-curricular projects in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, and applying their understanding of computer science, visual & performing arts, and digital citizenship. ✩Finding their voice and choice while developing and improving their digital literacy skills. They will showcase, reflect, and share what they have learned with the world using various apps to create code, e-books, films, and presentations. ✩Learning design-based thinking and using critical thinking, perseverance, and empathy to solve various problems. ✩Exploring resources outside our rural community, both through traditional research and virtual reality. ✩Spending time on personalized digital learning platforms to continue to develop skills in the core content. ✩Saving school resources and the planet, by allowing students to use programs such as Kami to mark up PDFs, rather than relying on paper copies. ✩Working independently, collaborating with peers, and communicating with teachers in school and at home, especially crucial in today's current distance learning environment. Most importantly, these iPads will give my students the tools they need to be fully prepared for the next phase in their educations, which will only involve more technology. I'd love to use these iPads to help them develop the skills of life-long learners, ready to be engaged in the broader world economy and community.
