My school and community understands the importance of literacy in the pursuit of our students achieving their goals. More than half of our students are bilingual and are reading in both languages. Our students love to read and are basically inhaling every book they can get their hands on. The families in my community are very hardworking, but at the end of the day they do not always have money for luxuries such as books. I am creating our school's first ever book swap which I hope to turn into a semi annual event where students can bring their old books from home and be able to exchange books with other students. In order to get this program running, I first need to make sure that all students have at least one book (hopefully more) to bring home. That is where Donor's Choose comes into play. Here is how the book swap will work: Early November: Any student with books they want to swap will bring them in After T-day break, student volunteers will help to organize and sort all books by age level. At this time, we will get a count on how many books we had donated, which means how many books we can give out to those that didn't bring in one. On December 22nd, community members will turn our cafeteria into a bookshop and students will come down and be able to get new books. When we swap again in a few months, all the students will have books at home to exchange!
