Due to budget cuts, the junior high school at which I teach has been forced to close the doors of its library. As a result, my students' book choices are extremely limited and dated, and their collective interest level in our current book options is low. To put it simply, my students do not enjoy many of the books our English department is able to offer them, and this issue is hindering their reading progress. The small classroom library and class sets of books I am requesting feature mostly main characters who are minorities, like many of my students, and their characters are facing many of the same modern day challenges that my students face on a daily basis. From books whose characters are immigrants to novels that detail what its like to have a parent in prison, these high level interest novels for young people will no doubt reignite my students' passion for reading!
