A majority of students in my class have never been out of California. When I read Flat Stanley as a third grader, I remember realizing how big the world is and how there is so much to see. My Flat Stanley traveled internationally and the project brought me joy and opened my eyes. I’m hoping I can replicate this feeling for my students while also engaging them in a chapter book that I can use as a tool for class discussions, writing ideas and to help build community. Flat Stanley would be a great first chapter book for Room 5. Incorporating listening to reading into my lesson plans will benefit students in many ways. Listening to reading helps students with listening skills, quiet concentration and bringing the story to life. Children’s audiobooks convey humor more easily and often include sound effects, which help keep students engaged. While students read along in their own books while listening, they are able to see and hear how stories are enunciated, learn new vocabulary and learn how punctuation is used.
