I teach both foundational biology and environmental science which includes the microbial world of the cell, bacteria, viruses, and anything small in the plant and animal kingdom. The moment students engage with the microbial world around (and within) them, they are hooked and want to know and see more. The microscope has been the single most powerful physical tool that I have used outside of field trips that really impress students with the wonder of science. Students often use the microscopes in laboratory investigations as they investigate and identify both biotic and abiotic specimens for various projects. The learning outcomes for these students are both rigorous content concepts such as current day genetics, environmental impacts, and issues, human systems to earth systems and all of the ways they connect, as well as the opportunity to consider the societal ethical and legal issues that are presenting themselves as our environmental challenges evolve.
