It's hard to learn and listen when your heart and mind are miles away or if your time away from school was filled with uncertainty or chaos. A Restore and Regulate room is for those students who are struggling to transition to a place emotionally where they are able to learn. Bean bags, calming tools, mediation exercises and cards, calming music, sand tray, color sheets, and the opportunity to sit with the counselor and talk or just be still and quiet and a safe calm place is what we are picturing for our R & R room. As we move away from punitive consequences that are not effective to a pro-active approach for students who are most in need, we see the necessity for a safe space for our students to re-set. I see this room as an opportunity to connect with my students and help them through some very tough situations they face at home! The Restore and Regulate room is a change in how we approach students who are struggling behaviorally but all behavior serves a purpose or need. I am hopeful and excited to give the school a new way to look at how we are serving that need through a restorative practice and a kinder approach.
