My low social economic middle school self-contained class serves 10 students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities. The typical student in my class reads at a 2nd grade level and struggles with understanding number sense. 93% of the school population are African American with 2% Caucasian. The class is taught outside the box; gardening, animal care, growing bugs are just some of the lessons we use to teach life.
