A majority of my special education students receive all their core classes in my self contained classroom, with some students spending upwards of 4.5 hours in their own desks. It is a very "traditional" classroom, with desks and chairs that are attached as one unit. These desks are detrimental to the needs of special education students. This population of students needs to move their legs freely, have the ability to fidget appropriately, and stand to increase levels of serotonin. My students would benefit IMMENSELY from the ability to stand while working! These standing desks will give students the ability to stand and move while anxious, allow fidgeting in an appropriate manner, and increase their well-being while maintaining their education.
