Every person is unique and what is best for one is not always best for the other. Students in my classroom have many different learning styles. Some of the students need to be physically engaged to really understand and comprehend what I am teaching. Currently, some students will stand next to their desk or even move their feet while they are listening to me. I think I can make this even better for those students. With flexible seating, students can have the option to go work at a standing desk in the back of the classroom. Students who need to wiggle a little can put a wiggle seat in their chair and get a little movement, while not distracting others. Still other students can choose a stabilizing ball to sit on. This will engage their muscles and get blood flowing to their brains without even bothering the person sitting next to them.
Research shows when students have movement, more blood flows to the brain helping them to learn. Flexible seating gives kids that movement during learning without taking away the learning of the students around them. I have options in place for students that I have already purchased myself for students to use during independent and small group work times. I want them to have those same options during instruction.
